Why share your story? Medicaid plays an essential role in the lives of over 1.2 million South Carolinians each year. It provides huge cost-savings for low-income people and families. It does this by giving coverage for everything from preventive care and therapy to medicines and serious surgeries and procedures.
There are still many South Carolinians that don't have access to health care though. Many fall into what we call a "coverage gap". This is where they do not qualify for Medicaid and cannot afford health insurance from the Affordable Care Act marketplace.
The Medicaid Stories Project aims to share the stories of real South Carolinian's and their experiences with the Medicaid program. We not only hear the many ways Medicaid has helped individuals in South Carolina, but also from those struggling to apply for the program and get the support they need. We share these diverse stories as a reminder that health care is more than just policy, it's a human right.
