Sixty-five thousand South Carolina children will now receive Medicaid benefits by the end of the month, thanks to recent action by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Eligible children are those whose parents receive food assistance or welfare payments through the Department of Social Services. All parents of qualified children will receive letters informing them of their enrollment. Parents are allowed to opt out if they please.

State legislators approved nearly $29 million in the state’s budget to add children to the program. In 2010 South Carolina ranked fifth worst in the nation for its percentage of insured children.
